The most famous Mr Toad of all is the one to be found in the pages of Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows, but that character has nothing to do with the charming frog at the heart of Mr Toad, Play’n GO’s 5-reel video slot.

The game’s 5x3 reel grid appears against a green-washed backdrop showing an illustration of trees, a pond, lily pads… This is the toad’s kingdom, presumably, and players are treated to sounds from the forests: chirping, whistling, birdsong; you get the idea. The title of the game appears in yellow writing in the top left-hand corner and the reels play host to toads (both Mr Toad and a female toad who, for simplicity’s sake, we’ll call Mrs Toad), hippos, butterflies and items of fruit, including watermelons, strawberries, grapes and lemons. There’s a lily pad, too, upon which sits a pink lily. The illustrations are colourful, though rather simply rendered.
Most of the symbols grant pay-outs for combinations of three, four or five. Remember though, wins pay in both directions. The most lucrative symbols are the frogs, with both Toads paying 50 for three, 80 for four and 150 for five.
Special Features
Sadly, the game does not include a wild symbol, which fairly limits your chances of finding a matching combination. However, Mr Toad and his bespectacled beau form winning combinations either on their own or when appearing alongside one another.
The aforementioned lily pad activates one of the bonus mini-games. You’ll need to find three to trigger the feature, but if you’re able to locate four or five, the resultant prizes will be higher. The leaves of the jungle part to show a lily pad and the comely Mrs Toad, who is perched on the other side of the water. Mr. Toad will then progress across the lily pads, unearthing bonus sums for your bank with every leap. Should he make it to the other side, you’ll be sitting pretty. But if that blasted hippo gobbles him up, the feature will come to an end. Depending on how much the hippo has cost you, you’ll probably nurse a grudge against the mammals for years to come.
Butterfly Bonus
This snappily-named feature occurs during the base game. Each time a butterfly lands to the left of Mrs Toad, or to the right of her hubby, an adhesive tongue extends and splatters the insect, revealing a multiplier of your stake that might be as high as 10x.
It’s also worth watching for the gold ring, which appears around the symbols every now and then. The jackpots are brought into play when you land three, four or five gold rings. Three jackpot symbols enables you to shoot for the Tasty Jackpot or move to the Silver Wheel. Four gold rings allows you to spin for the Luxury Jackpot – or the Tasty Jackpot – or even move to the Gold Wheel. Five gold rings, meanwhile, entitles you to spin for cash, the Tasty Jackpot, the Luxury Jackpot or the megabucks Dream Chance Jackpot.

Mr Toad isn’t the most dynamic slot game out there, but it’s fun, frivolous and offers the potential for progressive wins. The Butterfly Bonus is a nice touch, as is the Lily Pad Bonus.
