Brazil’s Ministry of Finance has declared that unlicensed gambling operators must cease operations in the country by October 1.

Brazil has long had gambling companies work in a largely unregulated gray market, but is underway with plans to launch a federal, regulated gambling market, which is set to launch on January 1, 2025.

Companies already operating will be able to continue to do so provided they have already applied for a license. Regis Dudena, General Secretary of the Secretariat for Betting and Prizes, said: “We will maintain the adaptation period until the end of December only for those who have already demonstrated that they want to act in accordance with the law, and in accordance with Brazilian rules.”

113 companies have applied for gambling licenses ahead of the 2025 launch, which require a payment of R$30m ($5.48m) to be submitted before the end of 2024. Brazil has already begun cracking down on payments received by operators that are not compliant.

A caretaker in Nottinghamshire, England, was jailed for six years after stealing ￡125,000 ($165,000) from an elderly man she was looking after to fund holidays and online gambling.

Anne Hill, 57, gained power of attorney over Louis Woodward, who is in his eighties. After accessing his bank accounts, she completely drained his life savings over a period of less than two years between August 2019 and April 2021.

Woodward was left with nothing remaining from his life savings, and was actually overdrawn when Hill was arrested in April 2021.

Hill had also used the power of attorney to take three drawdowns from a mortgage held by Woodward and secured against his home which totaled over ￡93,000 ($123,000). The money was then transferred to Hill’s own account.

Suspicions raised

Suspicions against Hill were first raised by one of Woodward’s friends, which eventually led to her 2021 arrest.

Hill had insisted that Woodward had given her permission to transfer the money to pay his bills, and also claimed that he had gifted her ￡60,000 ($79,320).

However, jurors heard information to the contrary from Woodward, giving a video interview before his death at the age of 86. He insisted that Hill only had permission to use money for his own benefit and that he had not gifted her the ￡60,000.

Hill blew over ￡108,251.91 ($143,345) gambling online

The court heard that over the two-year period of theft, the long-term gambler Hill blew over ￡108,252 ($143,345) gambling online across more than 17,000 transactions.?

She had also booked a two-week family vacation in Turkey costing over ￡7,000 ($9,300), although this was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hill sentenced

Hill denied any wrongdoing at the trial, but was found guilty of five counts of fraud and one count of perverting the course of justice.

On passing the sentence, Judge Mark Watson said: “This was a betrayal of the very significant trust placed in you. You deliberately targeted him because of his vulnerabilities.”

“You took what you wanted, when you wanted it, stripping him of his life savings and then trying to take even more.”

Detective Sergeant Daniel Weaver, who led the criminal investigation into Hill’s activities, also spoke of the additional victims who had suffered, saying: “The other victims in this case are the beneficiaries of Mr Woodward’s will – the animal charities and long-standing friends he had chosen to support after his death.”

“We will now look to use the Proceeds of Crime Act to recover available funds from Anne Hill, so that his final wishes can be fulfilled as far as possible.”

Despite the dispute heading to courts in London and Mexico, Playtech had constantly stressed that it wanted to continue its relationship with the Mexican brand. The relationship appears back on after Playtech announced on Monday that Cali Interactive has agreed to pay a total of $140m over four years to settle its debt.

The dispute over, a new agreement has been inked with the Cali brand that includes an eight-year B2B contract for Playtech’s ongoing software and technology support.

According to media reports, the new agreement will see Playtech own a 30.8% stake in a new US-incorporated subsidiary of Caliplay called Caliente Interactive. The UK firm can now also “appoint a director to Caliplay’s board.”

Caliplay Chairman Emilio Hank said the company was “delighted to finalize this renewed agreement.” Hank added the Mexican brand was “focused on growing Caliplay, leveraging our core strengths and Playtech’s leading technology to broaden our geographical footprint.”

The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado (USAO-CO) has announced a guilty verdict for the owner of Player One Arcade in Denver who ran an illicit gambling enterprise.

A federal jury found Denver native Jonathan Arvay, 38, guilty on one count apiece of conspiracy to conduct an illegal gambling business, and conducting an illegal gambling business.

The USAO-DO took to X Tuesday with news of the two guilty charges Arvay will face at his scheduled December 12 sentencing:

According to the feds, Arvay’s Player One Arcade was one establishment in a gambling parlor chain spreading outwards from Denver to the cities of Greeley and Pueblo and taking in Colorado Springs, Lakewood, and Aurora. 

These establishments housed multiple electronic gambling machines “made to resemble arcade games,” and virtual slot machines, stated the DOJ press release.

E-currency for cash

According to the USAO-CO release, whatever winnings players made on the games would be converted to cryptocurrency, which could then be exchanged for cash.

Arvay’s trial notes reveal customers in Player One Arcade, or the other parlors, would exchange any credits won for cryptocurrency known as Obsidian Digital Asset Coin.

Kirsch said the gambling parlors “masqueraded as arcades with a veneer of legitimacy.” IRS Criminal Investigation Denver Field Office Acting Special Agent in Charge, Tom Demeo, meanwhile, praised those involved in the investigation for helping unravel Arvay’s “complex financial scheme.”

Demeo added that IRS special agents will counter fraudsters devising “new ways to evade their tax liability and defraud the government,” by adding novel investigative methods to trace the illegal funds and “hold these criminals accountable.”

Community concerns

FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Mark Michalek said the money made by the illegal gambling parlors led to multiple violations besides money laundering and fraud. Michalek went on to thank all parties involved for successfully dismantling “the gambling dens that were negatively impacting surrounding communities.”

Why NFL underdogs betting works

Point spreads can be deceptive for a couple of reasons.

First, the value we mentioned of 5.5 points isn’t all that different from five points, or 4.5 points, or four points.

NFL spread betting heavily deals with the importance of the critical numbers three, six, and seven. These are the most common scoring denominations and are often individually or in combination the difference between finals scores. 

Eight of 16 NFL Week 2 games were decided by three, six, or seven points, including:

Bettors may see a 5.5-point line and take the opinion that it’s worth laying the points with the favored team without considering that there isn’t a great difference in lines between three and six points of value. That’s one way that oddsmakers can trick novice gamblers into taking unfavorable odds.

Look at the numbers

Stay with us here—numbers have meaning, and meaning has value.

NFL teams scored an average of 21.4 points per game through two weeks of actions. That’s the lowest amount since teams averaged 20.7 points per game in 2006 and a 1.83 percent decrease on the 21.8 average from last year.

When average scoring goes down, the importance of points goes up. 

Let’s look at two games from Week 2. In the first, the Kansas City Chiefs failed to cover as -6.5 point favorites in a game that finished with 51 total points (26-25).

In the second, the Bears successfully covered as +6.5 underdogs in a game with 32 total points (19-13).

The line was exactly the same in both situations. However, 6.5 points equals 20.3 percent of the total points in a game with 32, compared to just 12.7 percent of a game with 51 total points.

The takeaway here is that points have more value in low-scoring games, which gives a mathematical advantage to underdogs.

Combine that with the record-low level of quarterback production (which we also analyzed), and that’s a recipe for upsets.

Looking at Week 3, half of the 16 games involve lines of at least 5.5 points. They include:

• Patriots (+6.5) at Jets
• Giants (+6.5) at Browns
• Broncos (+6.5) at Buccaneers
• Panthers (+5.5) at Raiders
• Dolphins (+5.5) at Seahawks
• Rams (+7.5) vs. 49ers
• Jaguars (+5.5) at Bills
• Commanders (+8.5) at Bengals

Three of those games have projected totals below 40 points. Those (and the line’s percentage of the points total) are:

• Patriots (17.3 percent) at Jets
• Giants (16.9 percent) at Browns
• Broncos (16.5 percent) at Buccaneers

In what must be music to the ears of the iGaming brand’s marketing department, Reed said the deal’s goal is to deliver BetMGM’s “trusted sports betting information to our audience of more than 44 million sports fans.”

Greenblatt added that via BetMGM’s odds and insights integrations, the brand will empower USA Today Sports fans to stay “informed and engaged with their favorite teams and games.” The BetMGM CEO ended his statement saying his company is looking forward to a successful partnership that “fuels the excitement of sports betting throughout football season and beyond.”

For several seasons, some have considered Everton to be the basket case of the English Premier League (EPL). Once a giant of the English game, the Merseyside club has spent much of the last decade lurching from crisis to crisis, with off-field issues often spilling out and leading to on-pitch problems.

But could all that be about to change and via an unlikely source? Could a surprising knight in shining armor be about to ride to their rescue?

Who knows – nothing is ever a given where Everton is concerned – but yesterday it was reported that a new consortium is interested in buying the club, including US rapper and billionaire Jay-Z.

The 54-year-old is now far more than a rapper and has used his multi-millions to make a string of investments. The rapper-turned-entrepreneur recently announced an investment of?around $325m in Fanatics – the sporting goods company and sportsbook operator that has grown massively in recent years in the US and is looking to extend beyond its shores.

Moshiri woes

Jay-Z won’t be going it alone, of course, as the consortium said to be interested in buying out Everton’s controversial owner Farhad Moshiri is being led by John Textor. As reported in The Sun, the US rap star is one of several partners that Textor has spoken to as he looks to put together an offer to buy the Merseyside club.

Moshiri originally bought the club back in 2016 and initially found favor with the Everton fans after pumping millions into the club.

The money was used to pay off debts and bring in big names both on and off the pitch, arguably the biggest of the lot being Carlo Ancelotti – currently the head coach of Real Madrid – under whom they finished 10th and 12th in the EPL. Among the big-name players brought in during that period was Colombian superstar James Rodriguez.

By Everton standards, those were heady days and since Ancelotti’s departure in June 2021, they have been involved in three consecutive relegation battles under three different managers.

Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez was chosen to replace Ancelotti but it was no match made in heaven and the Spaniard lasted only six months in the dugout before being replaced by Frank Lampard. Again, it didn’t work out as the Everton board had hoped and Lampard lasted just a year before being sacked.

Dyche in trouble

The current incumbent of the Toffees’ technical area is Sean Dyche, once of Burnley, but four straight defeats at the start of the new season have plunged his reign into doubt. What has made this season-opening doubly difficult to stomach for Everton fans is that their last two games have been lost 3-2 from 2-0 winning positions.

But this has been a crisis in the making for a long time and the Ancelotti years were outliers in a spell that has often seen Everton fans at loggerheads with the club’s owners and board. Unsurprisingly, Moshiri has been trying to sell the club for a while but has found it to be a difficult, painstaking, and fraught process. Multiple talks with multiple prospective buyers have taken place before breaking down, and advanced talks with The Friedkin Group and, earlier this year, 777 Partners both failed at the final hurdle.

New 52,000-seater stadium

Part of the problem for Moshiri and any prospective new owner is that the club is in the process of building a new, stunning, state-of-the-art stadium in the Bramley-Moore Dock area of North Liverpool.

At an estimated cost of ￡760m ($1bn), the financing of the stadium, which is due to be completed later this year, will have a significant impact on any deal. ?

So far, all prospective deals have been deemed unworkable, but maybe Moshiri can finally agree on one with Textor, Jay-Z and company that will satisfy all parties and see Everton take ownership of their new 52,000-seater stadium with a new-look ownership group and board in situ.

If successful, Jay-Z will be the latest in an increasingly long line of US sportsmen and celebrities who have taken ownership or part-ownership of an English football club.

From Hollywood to England

League One Wrexham is famously owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds?and?Rob?McElhenney. The club played last night against Birmingham City who, among their ownership group, include retired NFL quarterback Tom Brady.

Even US basketball superstar LeBron James is in on the act with his link-up with Fenway Sports Group entitling him to a minority stake in Liverpool.

Only time will tell if the Textor/Jay-Z/Everton deal ever becomes a reality but such has been the level of angst among the blue half of Merseyside over the last decade, even a glimmer of hope for a brighter future has to be embraced.

For Jay-Z, the joke writes itself. He once famously wrote a track entitled 99 Problems. If the Everton deal goes through, better make that 100.

Talking about the Snaitech deal, Flutter Entertainment CEO Peter Jackson said that it is “compelling tactically and financially” and is an ideal fit for the company’s approach to mergers and acquisitions. He believes Snaitech will benefit by taking advantage of Flutter’s suite of capabilities and products.

The data protection arm of the UK government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology has “reprimanded” Flutter-owned Sky Betting & Gaming for unlawfully sharing subscribers’ details with advertising firms.

According to The Guardian on Tuesday, the telling off by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) came after the regulator investigated Flutter’s Sky Betting & Gaming holding brand Bonne Terre Ltd after a complaint by pressure group Clean Up Gambling.

The not-for-profit body alleged the Flutter iGaming subsidiary, whose brands include Sky Bet, Sky Vegas, Sky Bingo, Sky Casino and Sky Poker, was “misusing its customers’ personal data to target vulnerable gamblers.”

Upon investigation, the ICO said it found zero evidence Sky’s intention was to target at-risk gamblers.?

Fortunate finding

A Sky Betting & Gaming spokesperson stated the iGaming firm “welcomed” the all-clear on the vulnerable gambling accusation after the ICO’s “exhaustive 18-month investigation.”

What the probe uncovered, however, was that the Flutter firm had, without customers’ consent, processed their data via advertising cookies over a seven-week period in early 2023. Sky then immediately passed customers’ data onto advertising tech firms before it gave customers the option to accept or decline cookies.

In a statement, ICO Deputy Commissioner Stephen Bonner said seemingly tailored ads, such as a commercial for sneakers popping up after joining a gym online, were commonplace.?Bonner added, however, that while some people may be happy to consent to these ads, others might not appreciate them when they impinge on the more “sensitive aspects of our digital activity.”
