Major League Soccer (MLS) has ripped up the contract of Sporting Kansas City player Felipe Hernandez after he committed a second gambling-related violation. The announcement on Wednesday explained that he can’t play in the league until January 2026, when he becomes eligible to seek reinstatement.

While the scrutiny into the 26-year-old didn’t uncover any proof of match-fixing or the sharing of inside information, Hernandez reportedly breached integrity rules. The probe began in June when the MLS put him on administrative leave while it carried out its investigation.

This isn’t the first time Hernandez has gotten into hot water for violating the league’s betting policy. He received a season-ending suspension in October 2021 after investigators discovered he placed wagers on two MLS games that didn’t involve his own team. The league warned him to not engage in any betting in the future after he admitted to struggling to pay his gambling debts.

The midfielder has appeared eight times for Sporting Kansas City this season, with the team sitting 12th out of 14 teams in the Western Conference.
